Basketball Semi-Final

Tue 2nd Feb 2016

A tough match today, toughest we've played so far. They had tall, strong girls, well trained and showed how good they were, especially in the first quarter. We didn't panic, and our coach Rob reminded our girls how we had come to be in the all Ireland semi final. Defence took priority, Kacie took command of their star forward, limiting her input, Ella Murtagh put in the game of her life, constantly harrying their ball carrier, allowing Sofia, Belen and Irene to steal the ball. Sky and Georgia fought for everything, Ella and Eve stood tall in defence. Sofia was a scoring machine, producing some insane shots through the crowded defence. Everyone played a role, typified by Maeve coming on and taking 2 shots in as many minutes, and catching her own rebound. When the pressure came on in the 4th quarter we were proud of our travelling support, who found their voices to provide the atmosphere. Castlerea community school threatened a comeback with 2 minutes left on the clock. However, we were playing smart by then and made the right passing choices. Irene stealing the ball, providing a clean pass to give Kacie an easy lay up to close out the game. Onwards and upwards, and as I told the girls , they are now guaranteed a minimum of All Ireland Silver medals! The final is on the last week of Feb.
