English is a core subject in the School, studied for four classes per week at Junior level and five in the Senior cycle.

In addition to the curriculum, the English Department is highly active on the extra-curricular front. Visits to the theatre, particularly where it relates to plays on the curriculum, are a regular feature, as are visits to the school by leading writers and academics.

In-house Public Speaking competitions are organised annually for 1st and 2nd Years while senior students are encouraged to participate both in Inter-School Public Speaking and Debating Competitions.

Drama has always been an important element within the School and every two years, the English Department has responsibility for the production and direction of the School Play, in which students of all ages are invited to audition and take part.
