This is a choice subject for Junior Cycle. The Junior Certificate syllabus provides students with the knowledge, understanding and skills necessary for living as individuals and as members of a family. The syllabus is based on a core of five areas:
- Food studies and culinary skills
- Consumer studies
- Social and health studies
- Resource management and home studies
- Textile studies
and one optional study from the following three: Childcare, Design and craftwork, and Textile skills.
The Leaving Certificate syllabus provides students with knowledge, understanding, skills and attitudes necessary for managing their own lives, for further education and work.
The syllabus is based on a core of three areas:
- Food studies
- Resource management and consumer studies
- Social studies
and a choice of one elective from the following three: Home design and management, Textiles, fashion and design, and Social studies.
As Home Economics is such a popular subject at The King's Hospital a second kitchen was installed in the summer of 2017.
