The second cycle – the Senior Cycle – begins in Form 5 and ends with the Leaving Certificate exam, which is taken at the end of Form 6. See the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment website here for full details on the Senior Cycle, including its framework and syllabus. See also our careers guidance section here.
Students begin by taking eight subjects in Form 5 but the best grades of six subjects are counted in the Leaving Certificate for university entrance.
The core subjects are Irish (unless you are exempt from Irish); English, Mathematics and a language (French, Spanish or German), unless you have specific difficulties. If this is the case, you should discuss this with Ms S Tanner, Ms L McGinn or Ms S Daly (Head of Academics) in the Careers Guidance Department.
You also choose four subjects from the following:
- Applied Maths
- Agricultural Science
- Design and Computer Graphics
- Home Economics
- Religious Education
- Politics & Society
