The King's Hospital offers a six-year system of secondary education. Pupils are normally between the ages of 12 - 18 years. The school's Guidance Department gives pupils advice regarding all subject choices.
1. The Junior Cycle is of three years duration. The State examination marking the end of this cycle is the Junior Certificateof the Department of Education & Science.
2. The fourth year, the Transition Year Programme of the Department of Education & Science, provides an essential foundation for the Senior Cycle. This is our Leaving Certificate Foundation Year.
3. The Senior Cycle is of two years duration. The State examination marking the end of this cycle is the Leaving Certificate of the Department of Education & Science.
FORM 1
Core subjects: Irish(unless exempted by the Department of Education & Science); English; Mathematics; History; Geography; Science; Religious Education; Civic, Social & Political Education (CSPE); a modern language*.
*Pupils choose between French, German and Spanish;the school cannot guarantee pupil's fIrst choice.
Introductory courses: Art, Craft & Design; Business Studies; Home Economics; Music; Technical Graphics.
Non-examination subjects: Physical Education (PE); Social, Personal & Health Education (SPHE); Information Technology (IT) - Form 1 only.
FORMS2&3
Subjects are normally taken at Higher Level, but some pupils may opt for Ordinary Level.
Core subjects and Non-examination subjects as in Form 1.
Optional subjects: Pupils are required to choose TWO subjects* from: Art, Craft & Design; Business Studies; Home Economics; Music; Technical Graphics; a second modern language. *there are limited places in some subjects; others may not be offered if the number of applicants is too low.
FORM 4
All pupilsparticipate in the Leaving Certificate Foundation Year. The year offers a varied programme of studies. The academic content is based on the subjects taken for Junior Certificate. The programme is designed to introduce Senior Cycle material; to facilitate personal development; and to enable wise decisions to be made regarding subject choices and career paths. It includes a course in Information Technology.
FORMS 5 & 6
Pupils normally take eight subjects. All subjects may be taken at Higher or Ordinary level.
Core subjects: Irish(unless exempted by the Department of Education & Science); English; Mathematics.
Optional subjects: One subject from eachof the following blocks:
Block A: Art; Business; Geography; History; Physics.
Block B: Accounting; Agricultural Science; Biology; Chemistry; History.
Block C: Biology; Business; Chemistry; Design & Communication Graphics; Music.
Block D: Applied Mathematics; Economics; Geography; Home Economics; Religious Education; Spanish.
Block E: French; Geography; German; Spanish.
There are limited places in some subjects; others may not be offered if the number of applicants is too low. The school may find it necessary to alter the above blocks from time to time.
Non-examination subjects: Pupils take a module containing: Religious Education; Physical Education; and Careers Education.
