Arts, Crafts & Design

Art Craft & Design is studied by all pupils in Form 1, who attend three classes per week, in which they receive a broad introduction to the language of Art. In Form 2, students may choose the subject and the class contact increases to four periods per week. On average, some 50% of pupils in Form 2 opt to study Art through to the Junior Certificate in Form 3 , and then as a core subject in the Transisition Year. A through investigation of painting and design for craftwork, including ceramics forms the basis of the art curriculum during these years.

In the Senior cycle the number of classes increases to five per week, with the introduction of the history and the appreciation of art, studied alondside the continued development of skills in drawing, painting and the various crafts.

The Art department considers field trips to be an important information gathering resource and annuals excursions to the Zoo and the Natural History Museum are organised for students in Form 2. Newgrange is visited by the Transition Year, as well as regular trips to exhibitions as they arise. Form 5 and 6 visit the National Musuem.

The Art department has an annual 'Open Day' exhibition which showcases Junior Certificate project work and Leaving Certificate Craftwork. Extra curricular activities in Art, Craft and Design include portfolio classes, ceramics classes and set design work.
