Geography is a core subject in the Junior Cycle. The first year pupils have two class periods per week, and this is increased to three in both second and third year. Geography is studied as a core subject in Transition Year.
In the Senior Cycle, Geography is offered as a choice. It is a popular subject and is chosen by a significant number of Leaving Certificate pupils each year. In Form 5 and 6 pupils attend five class periods per week.
Teaching methods throughout the six years are varied and assist pupils to establish a solid understanding of the course material, as well as helping them to form attitudes and values in relation to the modern world. There is also a major focus on the learning of geographical skills.
The recently restructured Leaving Certificate course includes a geographical investigation involving fieldwork excursions. Similar fieldwork exercises are organized in Transition Year.
