| | | | History | History is an important core subject for the Junior Cycle in the school curriculum. Pupils in Form 1 attend two classes per week, and this in increased to three in Forms 2 and 3. History is also studied as a core subject in the Transition Year.
In the Senior Cycle, history is offered as a choice, and the recent reform of the Leaving Certificate Programme to allow for a more source and document-based study of the subject, has made it a popular choice for many senior pupils. On average, some 40 students select history in The King’s Hospital as a subject for Leaving Certificate, attending five classes per week during Form 5 and 6. 20% of the Leaving Certificate examination is pre-submitted in the form of a Special Research Topic.
The history department uses a variety of teaching methodology to ensure that the subject is both interesting and engaging for all students. Every attempt is made to bring the subject ‘alive’ and so class excursions to view historical sites are regularly organised. The school library has an extensive range of books, magazines and other sources that can be assessed by history students. Pupils are also encouraged to utilise the school archives in their study of the subject.
Important history prizes awarded on Charter Day include the Whiteside Cup, awarded for the most noteworthy Research Study Topic by a Leaving Certificate pupil, and the Lee Prize, awarded for excellence in the Leaving Certificate.
