Modern Languages

Modern Languages play an important role in the school curriculum for both the Junior and Senior cycle.

In Form 1, pupils opt for one language from a choice of French, German and Spanish. They attend four classes per week in their chosen language. In Form 2, pupils may then opt for a second language from the choice offered. French, German and Spanish are also studied in Transition Year, with the added option for pupils to take a beginners’ module in Spanish. In the Senior Cycle, students can continue their chosen languages in preparation for the Leaving Certificate oral and written examinations.

All languages are taught through the medium of the target language, with particular emphasis on communicative skills. The Modern Language department has a wide range of resources, including a recently installed multi-media laboratory. The school library boasts an extensive selection of novels, magazines and educational aids in all three languages.

There is a considerable commitment to activities that support the teaching and learning of French, German and Spanish outside the classroom. Pupils in the Senior Cycle participate in inter-school debates, quizzes and drama workshops. Regular excursions include cinema and theatre visits. Students are also encouraged to spend time in their target language country.

"Use of the target language was exemplary. All teachers displayed a very high level of linguistic competence and were comfortable speaking French to their students. The register of language that was used was appropriate to the needs and the ability of the different class groups ... The commitment of the French team to use the target language for instruction, for classroom management and for communication was impressive and is highly commended" Department of Education & Science Inspection Report of French - June 2006
