Science

Science is a compulsory core subject for all pupils in Forms 1,2 and 3. During the Junior Certificate programme, pupils attend one double period and two single periods per week. The Junior Certificate syllabus consists of Biology, Chemistry and Physics and assessment is by means of a terminal examination paper and coursework. The latter is made up of 30 mandatory experiments/investigations, which have to be completed and recorded and two additional investigations, which are submitted.

Science is also compulsory in the Transition Year, with pupils attending one double class and one single class per week. Students are taught through a series of six modules during the year - environmental chemistry, human biology, electromagnetism, forensics/sports science, investigative physics and agricultural science.

Some 85% of students then go on to choose at least one science subject in the Leaving Certifciate programme. Those on offer are Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Applied Mathematics and Agricultural Science. Pupils in Form 5 and 6 attend one double and three single periods in that time.

The Science Department is one of the largest in the school with 9 members, and two student teachers - and added to that are learning support staff. The Department is based in six laboratories, as well as utilising various classrooms in the school.

Outside class, students are involved in various activities - Ploughing Championships, Farm visits, Young Scientist (RDS), Sci Fest, Science Olympiad, ISTA Olympiads, Ecology Field trips, Museum visits, Intel (Electronics) and local colleges and universities.

Form 2 Sci-Fest 2011
On 11th and 12th of March a science festival was held in A10 for form 2 students. Students had to come up with their own ideas, research them, design experiments and then carry out an investigation. The projects then had to be presented on a visual display and in a report booklet.

The King’s Hospital scooped EIGHT prizes at Scifest held in the Institute of Technology in Tallaght on Tuesday 10th May. From approx 25 schools, 180 entries and 450 odd students, five projects from KH were awarded prizes on the day. This was a tremendous achievement as it represented half the prizes that were available to our students on the day.
