HEAD of ATHLETICS
Matt Jarvis

Athletics is one of the two main sports for boys and girls in the summer term. The school has its own grass running track situated prominently in front of the school.

Pupils from the school compete most successfully in the West Leinster Championships, with many qualifying to take part in the full Leinster Schools’ Championships and then to the prestigious Schools’ All Ireland Championships. The King’s Hospital has a long record of excellent achievement in these arenas and many All Ireland Champions in various athletic disciplines have been produced over the years.

The school also hosts several inter-school competitions during the season, most notably the Hall Cooper Trophy. There is also a strong tradition of competition in athletics within the school itself, with pupils competing against one another at all age levels, culminating in Sports’ Day, which in held in late May.

Athletics also plays a vital role as one of the three components of the unique ‘Crocker-athletics’, a team based competition for all Form 1 and 2 boys and girls, comprising of Athletics, Soccer and Cricket.

Cross-Country is also an important sport during the Winter and Easter terms, with pupils participating in the West Leinster Schools’ championships, with competitors then progressing to Leinster and All-Ireland Championships
