The occasion is a very important one in the school calendar, as it is the opportunity to recognise and reward those pupils who have made a significant or substantial contribution to sport in The King’s Hospital during the previous year. The event is now in its third year. The formalities were co-ordinated by the Head of Sport & Extra-Curricular activities, John Rafter. Prizes were given in a wide-spreading numbers of sports, illustrating the excellence of achievement, but also the variety achieved within the school. The prizes were awarded by the Chairman of the Board, Hubert Beaumont, supported by the Vice-Principal, Glascott Symes, and the Pastoral Head, John Aiken. | | | | The Chairman of the Board presents certificates to the prze-winners |
| | | | The Guest Speaker for the night was Caleb Powell. Caleb is most familiar with sporting achievement in The King’s Hospital, having taught in the school for forty-one years, headed the development of Rugby there for most of that time, and was a most successful coach of the school SCT, helping them to reach the Leinster Schools’ Cup Final in 1982. Caleb was also the first coach appointed to oversee an Irish Schools XV. Caleb’s administrative skills have stretched well beyond the walls of The King’s Hospital, and he was, up until very recently, the Chairman of the Leinster Schools’ Rugby Committee. That commitment has been rewarded with his appointment as Junior Vice-President of the IRFU, meaning that Caleb will be President of the IRFU very soon. This is a tremendous honour for the school. | | | | Caleb gave a thought-provoking address directed at the many prize-winners. He emphasised the changes that sport was under-going, the vital need for a balanced approach to a life involving sport, and the need for schools such as The King’s Hospital to ensure that as well as pursuing sporting excellence, they should ensure wide-spread pupil involvement, and always cater for those who wished to play at any level of expertise. |
| | | | | | The Evening also involved the presentation of the annual ‘Hall of Fame’ Award to a Past Pupil who has achieved very notable standards in sport. The Award for 2008 was introduced by the Headmistress, Frances Hill. This year’s recipient was Grainne Clancy. Grainne left The King’s Hospital in 1977, having excelled in school sport in Cricket, Hockey & Athletics. She then went on to have a notable career in Irish women’s cricket, representing her country on many occasions. Unfortunately, Grainne was not able to be present on the evening, but the ‘Hall of Fame’ Award was graciously accepted on her behalf by her nephew, Conor Clancy. | | | | The Headmistress announces the induction of Grainne Clancy into the The King's Hospital's Sports 'Hall of Fame' |
