Sports Awards Evening - Saturday 22nd September 2009

The annual Sports Awards Evening was held in the Wilson Wright Hall on Saturday 22nd September, beginning at 7.30pm. The occasion is a very important one in the school calendar, as it is the opportunity to recognise and reward those pupils who have made a significant or substantial contribution to sport in The King’s Hospital during the previous year. The event is now in its fourth year. The formalities were co-ordinated by the Head of Sport & Extra-Curricular activities, John Rafter. Prizes were given in a wide-spreading numbers of sports, illustrating the excellence of achievement, but also the variety achieved within the school. The prizes were awarded by the Chairman of the Board, William Maxwell , supported by the Acting-Principal, Glascott Symes, and the Pastoral Head, John Aiken.

Emma Beamish, guest speaker for the 2009 Sports Awards Evening.
Emma gave a most interesting & inspiring talk to those present and some excellent advice for the young sportsmen & sportswomen in the school - enjoy yourself - but talent brings you so far, then it is down to hard work !

The Guest Speaker for the night was Emma Beamish. Emma attended The King's Hospital from 1994-97 and captained the U-14 Girls' cricket XI to the title, as well as going on to lead both the JCT & SCT to cup finals. Emma represented Leinster Schools and after school went on to play for the British Universities while attending the University of Exeter. In 2002, she played for the Irish U-21 side in the European Championship and the following year, Emma made her full international debut against the Netherlands. Emma has had a most successful international career since then, including opening the batting in the 2005 World Cup in South Africa and as recently as this year, was an ever present in the Irish team at the recent European Championships in Dublin.

Nigel Henderson (1980-86) received the Hall of Fame Award for 2009. Nigel played on the Irish Schools' side in 1985 & 1986, before going on to captain his country at full international level on 33 occasions and gaining a total of 68 caps.

The Evening also involved the presentation of the annual ‘Hall of Fame’ Award to a Past Pupil who has achieved very notable standards in sport. The Award for 2009 went to Nigel Henderson ('Nidge'!) who played as goalkeeper with Pembroke Wanderers from his arrival there in 1987 after the left The King's Hospital until his retirement in 2008 ! Nigel also captained his club to many successes and also represented the Irish national side on 68 occasions , including 33 as captain. He is currently the goalkeeping coach to Ireland as they prepare for the World Cup Qualifiers to be played in Argentina this November. A wondwerful and distinguished career, and one that Nigel and The King's Hospital can be very proud of !

The ceremony was very well attended by parents and staff, and tea was served afterwards in the Dining Hall, giving all an opportunity to mix and meet the prize-winners.
