Hockey is one of the main sports played in the first two terms for both boys and girls. The school has excellent facilities for the coaching and playing of the sport, with one artifical pitch (with floodlights) and three grit pitches.
In boys hockey, a total of some ten teams represent the school in both friendlies and in the Leinster Schools' League and Cup competitions. Matches are played traditionally on Wednesday afternoons, but with the use of floodlights, matches can be played at other times. Hockey is compulsory for pupils in Form 1 and 2, and after that, pupils are encouraged to continue playing the game.
Last year, the U-13 XI and the Junior (U-16) XI reached the semi-finals of their Leinster Schools' Cup competitions and all sides performed well in their respective arenas. Each year, the Senior XI play in the All-Ireland Schools' tournament, which takes place during half-term in the first term.
In Girls hockey, some fourteen teams are fielded regularly. Again they play friendlies and Leinster Schools' League and Cup competitions, mainly on Wednesday afternoons, but also on other week-days. Teams also compete in the North Side League towards the end of the season, and have done so with great success in recent years.
Both boys' and girls' teams embark on tours to Britain and abroad to widen their experience of the game and enjoy the camaraderie of such trips. |
