Friday 6th August
Turlough Hughes (The King's Hospital) moved up into a top twelve ranking at the world junior championships at Racice, Czech Republic. Starting much more positively than in his heat, Turlough was well in contention, but in 5th position, as the scullers moved into the middle phase of the race. It was in the second half that the Irish sculler began to make an impact, recording one of the fastest final 500 metre splits in what Performance Director Martin McElroy desribed as 'a very well executed race plan' to row down both Albania and Hungary and close on Estonia to gain the prized third qualification place in a personal best time, and a lane in tomorrow afternoon's A/B semi-final.

He goes for one final time in the B Fianl at 11.06 CET (Sunday) to gain his final world ranking (7th-12th).

A titanic battle saw Turlough move from 5th ahead of Croatia early on, passing out Luthuanua and locked in a nose to nose race with Estonia which by 1500 metes saw the Irish sculler move clear in third. The last quarter was a charge for the line as first Ireland challenged Serbia and Portugal and then in the final twenty strokes the Lurhyanuan moved right back to claim third on the line. 2.5 seconds covered first to fifth, just over a length!Result: 7th POR 8th SRB 9th LTH 10th IRL 11th EST 12th CROThe King's Hospital boarder from Westport, a proud Mayoman finishes 2010 as the 10th ranked single sculler in world rowing!
