Rugby is one of the principal winter team sports played by boys in The King’s Hospital. During the season up to twelve teams are fielded from various age groups, playing matches on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Rugby is compulsory for pupils in Form 1 and 2, and then students are encouraged to continue playing the game.
Fixtures are primarily played against schools in the Dublin and surrounding areas, but teams regularly travel throughout Ireland to play. The King’s Hospital also welcomes frequent visitors from the UK and from further afield. Tours are taken abroad, and most recently, teams have travelled to Italy and South Africa. A Senior Development Tour is planned for the latter in July 2009.
The school participates in many Leinster Schools’ league competitions and the highlights of the season are the Leinster Schools’ Senior and Junior Cup. The King’s Hospital can boast of a proud record in such competitions. Players from the school are regularly selected to play on the interprovinal and national sides.
