YA-Zcon

International Festival of Literature Dublin Young Adult Book Festival hosted by The King’s Hospital School.

World Book Day 2019 – 7th March 2019

The King’s Hospital, Palmerstown, Dublin, hosted a book festival YA-Z CON, in conjunction with Sarah Webb, curator of the International Literature Festival Dublin for families and schools.  Several successful authors had presented, including Dave Rudden, Meg Grehan, Sarah Maria Griffin, Peadar O Guilin, Colm Keegan and David Almond from the UK.

Throughout the year, outside of the festival dates, International Literature Festival Dublin (ILFDublin) runs once off events for adults and various visiting authors. This fantastic fair had taken place on Thursday, March 7th, in celebration of World Book Day 2019!

The King’s Hospital opened their doors to other schools to come and listen to their phenomenal panels of YA authors being interviewed, as well as discuss and debate topics including inspiration and mental health! Gutter Book Shop were the official book seller for the festival.

The celebration of books and writing included a visit by award winning English author David Almond, a presentation by Elaina Ryan (Children’s Books Ireland) on the “We Are the Poets” project, a panel with Meg Grehan and Dave Rudden talking about creativity and mental health and a second panel with Sarah Maria Griffin, Peadar Ó Guilín and Sarah Webb to discuss ideas and inspiration. The young people had also shared their own writings with the audience in a session hosted by Colm Keegan.

“ILFDublin were delighted to be working with King’s Hospital on this unique event which had brought together young adult readers from all over Dublin with some of the best writers around. We were particularly thrilled that David Almond can join us as he has such an important voice in YA fiction.” Sarah Webb, Family and Schools Programmer, ILFDublin said.

“YA-Z CON really enlightened my thoughts on reading and inspired me to pick up a book, instead of going straight home to turn on Netflix. I had the opportunity to talk to some of my favourite authors one-on-one as well as join in on their discussions about mental health. I enjoyed every minute and I would love to come back next year!, said a transition year student.

The King’s Hospital would like to encourage young readers globally, to pick up a book and to spark your creativity. YA-Z CON is a conference for young adults in generation Z, the generation that is taking over the world! “This festival is definitely a worth-while experience and there is something in it for everybody.”
